The film you refer to about the girl who runs away from home was "The First Day of my Life", by David Uloth (with Disciples of Ursula tunes on the soundtrack).

I've seen some really bad shorts - and some really good shorts.

There's always Bambi vs. Godzilla...

by the way, you're sounding like a pro explaining css right now. don't worry, you're pulling it off nicely.

I'll start paying attention in a minute.

M

Right, but features can explore further. Look at "Munich". There is an overriding idea there - vengeance foments vengeance - but there are also many side dishes. Among them: Does Israel have a right to exist? Do Palestinians have cause to use violence? Is it moral to take out philosophical leaders as well as perpetrators?

Those are additional issues a focused short would have to avoid.

"Munich" as a short? Possibly only the sequence with the planting of the bomb in the phone, and the girl who answers it. You could fit flashbacks of the Munich attack in there. But the tight spine of that short would be these seekers of retribution who would rather fail than slay an innocent. The flashbacks would counterpoint that nicely.

Thanks for the follow up. Good stuff. I'll defer to your greater experience, and say you may be right. In fact, I will go one step further -- that forceful statement of a singular idea or gimmick (as with the signs) or whatever is actually what makes the best screenplays overall. I may have to post about that myself soon. but basically, when I think about all the best scripts out of the thousand plus that I've read, they all had a cohesive and strongly stated driving force/idea. So why should it be any different in a short?
