Ants? In January?

Over the last three days, I’ve mercilessly slaughtered three ants, one per day. Two I slew on my desk. The latest, this afternoon, I crushed in our master bathroom.

Ants come inside our home every once in a while, in summer. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an ant in Montreal in January. It’s a small black/red/black kind – a species of Camponotus. (We also get big black ants and tiny red ones and black ones round here.)

Here’s hoping these aren’t some sort of mutant super-ants with a keenly developed sense of revenge.

Hmmmm, I wonder what’s up with the ants as you’re not the only one! I just posted about them appearing in our house in January also…in NY! Count yourself lucky with only 3…I have hundreds.

It’s now January 2011, and I walked into our kitchen in Kent, UK at 7.30 this morning, to find the floor covered in ants! As the posting above, I am “mercilessly slaughtering” them. I’ve never seen ants this early before.

I have slaughtered about 2 dozen today…what I have been reading is because of the weather they are coming out of there hibernation…rats are also waking up and becoming an out of season problem. What will be interesting is what will happen when winter finally arrives and they are not prepared…
